1. Ld3 Kg4 2. Lb5 Kh5 3. Kg7 Kg4 4. Ld7+ Kh5 5. Le6 f5 6. gxf6ep.#

It don't say how many moves or if it's a H#. But in this position there's a possibility. (2010-6-28)
Henrik Juel: Mate (by an ep capture) usually means #1, so my solution is
Kh5 Te5 Lh4 Pd4,d5,d6,f5,h6 - Kf6 Pf7,g5
Last move was g7-g5, so 1.fxg6ep# is permitted. (1.Lxg5 also mates).
In the symmetrical position (Kd5 Tg5 Ld4 Pd6,f5,h4,h5,h6 - Kf6 Pe5,f7) last move could be Ke7-f6. (2010-6-29)

Henrik Juel: I think you got the content right, hans; but your notation is non-standard. I prefer something like:
-1.e7xSd8=S Sb7 ... -5.Kb5 Sf1 -6.Kc4 S=f2 -7.Kd3 f3 -8.Kd2 g4xLf3 -9.Lb7 h5xLg4 -10.Lc8 d5 -11.L=c7 b5 -12.c6 b6 -13.b5xDTLc6, unpromote Lg4 on c8, retract c7xDSd6 etc. Ceriani-Frolkin theme: 3 uncaptured officers unpromote.

Henrik Juel: I agree with Hans. The retroplay continues with 27... f6xRg5 opening the cage; the officers are extracted (except the black king), and the next uncapture is f2xBe3 allowing retraction of e7-e6, after [Rh8] and [Bf8] have come home. So the answer to the stipulation question is a2-a3, not a7-a6. (2010-4-23)
Mario Richter: Lösungsangabe im Sinne von Hans und Henrik korrigiert. (2010-4-23)
Thomas Volet: Yes. I never looked at the database solution, but as I recall, the solution was a2-a3. (2010-8-10)

Henrik Juel: Before we start looking for the retroplay, we might entertain the notion that the diagram or stipulation is wrong; I base this suspicion on the fact that the forward stipulation (with White to move) has lots of solutions. (2010-8-17)
Gerd Wilts: Diagram is correct, original stipulation was "Reflexmatt (seit PAS) in 1 Zug". (2010-8-17)

1) Wer gewinnt?
2) Konnte Schwarz rochieren?

1. - Kxa2?,2.0-0 -Bexd3,3. Te8 - Dxe8#, ist also illegal!
1. - Kxa2, 2. Kf8/Kf7(Dual)-Bexd3, 3.Te8- De8# (2010-6-19)

Henrik Juel: The idea is probably to legalize the position by removing one man, then #1.
There seems to be 10 solutions: remove Tb4, Td4, Lf1, or any white pawn. (In such a joke problem, pointing out a dual is ridiculous, but still: two mates after removal of Pc3). (2010-7-10)

#2 (wer?). Weiß zieht an.

hans: Don't understand German or Frence, but I do know that d7-d5 don't have to be the last move. (Th7-h8) (2010-6-21)
Henrik Juel: The stipulation means: #2 (who?). White to move.
The motto means: The multiple positions.
Maybe the intention was:
If last move was d7-d5, White mates in 2 by 1.cxd6ep any 2.d7#
If last move was Th7-h8, Black mates in 2 by 1.any Lxd2 2.any Lf4#; but 1.gxh8S Lxd2 2.Sxf7/Sxg6 prevents the mate. (2010-6-21)

Black needs a tempo to get on move, and the only piece to do that is Th8, so 0-0 is illegal. (2010-6-20)
Mario Richter: The term usually used to describe this kind of problems is "Parity problem". The bRh8 might have been on h8 all the time, since the tempo move might also have been made by the black Queen, but in this case, the bK must have already moved, thereby losing the right to castle too..

1) R: 1. 0-0-0, dann 1. 0-0 Dxg2#
2) R: 1. 0-0, dann 1. 0-0-0 Dxb7#
hans: Black takes back 0-0 and 1. 0-0-0 Dxb7#

This is too easy. Can someone tell what F.P.I. means? (2010-6-24)
Gerd Wilts: F.P.I. means "Fausse Position Initiale", the French for "Fake Initial Position". Luigi Ceriani used this term for a position which is exactly like the initial game array, but with Black to play. This can be achieved only with fairy conditions like vertical cylinder. I made the stipulation a little bit more precise. (2010-6-24)

Henrik Juel: Black captured [Lf1] on f1, d7xe6xf5xg4xh3, e7xf6, and h7xg6, accounting for all missing white men, so last move was not a6xb5, Kc8xc7, or Kd8xc7. If last move were Kb7-c7 or Kd7-c7, White pawns would have to have captured cxdxc6, d2xe3xf4xg5xh6, fxg, and hxg, accounting for all missing black men; but [Pa7]'s destiny makes this impossible: it was not captured by a white pawn, nor did it capture. If last move were e7xf6, Lb8 would have to be [Pa7]/[Pc7] promoted on a1/c1 without further black captures; but this would entail one too many captures by white pawns, because [Lf8] was captured by an officer. So last move was b7-b5. (2010-7-9)

Schwarz hat einen Stein von a2 genommen. Führe den Zug zu Ende!
hj: In English the stipulation is something like 'Black has lifted a man from a2 to move it. Complete the move!' The last part gives the show away: 0... La2-b1, because only a bishop has a unique move. The previous retroplay was -1.Sg1 Lb1 -2.Sh3 Lc2 ... -7.Sg1 Lh1 -8.Sh3 L=h2 -9.Sg1 h3 -10.b4 h4 -11.Sh3 h5 -12.h4xSg5 Sh7 -13.Sg1 etc. Black needs to add an officer to be unpromoted on h1; but DTS fail because of retroopposition on h3. A reformulated stipulation might be 'Black to move. Add a man on a2.' (2005-4-25)

hans: This looks 'mission impossible' The captures are clear hxgxfxexdxc(SSLDP)but how got the Dame in game? For d2-d3 only after d3xc2 and g2-g3 after all wT and sT behind the pawns and Sh1 is on place. So how does wD pass wK ? (2010-6-26)
Henrik Juel: Indeed, it seems like an illegal position.
Maybe the idea was to retract as fast as possible: sD, sL, sK to d2 and (much) later to a1, wK out via d2, sK to d2 and later out via g2 to e8, sD to d8, sL to c8; this plan requires several T retractions and screenings, and possibly it takes 50.0 retractions or more before b7-b6 can be retracted as the last pawn move in the game. I did not bother to count, because the idea makes sense only if the position is legal.
What is the meaning of the keyword 'unused' here? (2010-6-27)
Gerd Wilts: The position is indeed illegal. I removed the unnecessary keyword 'unused'. (2010-6-27)

Henrik Juel: The wB's fell on c6 and c1, the bB's on h3 and e7. Orig. Mao b8 made at least 10 moves, incl. a switch-back and a round-trip: b8-d7-b8, then a6, then b4-a2xc1-e2-f4-d5-b4, where it was captured. You may find an analysis on the RetroCorner, http://janko.at/Retros/

Gitterschach
paul: Solution: wKB was captured at home. The wK could only reach g1 through O-O. Black did just play Qb1xd1+.
The wR now on a2 could only reach a2 from higher up on the a-file. Which requires cross-captures a2xb3 and b2xa3, in that order. Thus the sequence has been wNb3-a1, then wPa2xb3, then wRa-a2, then wPb2xa3, then wBc1-b2. The actual wRa2 must be a promotee (can't be wKR after O-O) and the original wRa1 has been captured on its home square. Then the wKR has just been taken on d1.
The promoted R requires the sequence wPh2-h4xg5xf6xe7xd8=R. This (and the a-b cross-captures) account for all missing black units, so that the bPe7 is part of these captures, and has been taken on e7, forcing the g5 and f6 captures to be bl. Knights. The bQB is white-squared and has been taken on b3.
The bK was not on e8 when e7xd8=R occurred. He could only have escaped e8 with O-O-O (hence his first move !) because square e7 and bBf8 had never been free before. So that the bQR was taken on d8 and the bKR on a3. (2010-8-29)

1 Qd4! if kside not ok, 1 Qg5! if qside not ok, and both solutions work if neither castling ok. This latter overlap is not a defect, in that both winning lines are otherwise forced. Or is there some other winning line that I am missing? (2001-10-17)

La1 must be promoted piece, but there are 8 pawns so g7-g5 can't be last move, so the solution is illegal.

In b) there are 7 pawns, so La1 can be promoted piece.
But I think Michel overlooked the Towers. One also must be a promoted piece, if g7-g5 is the last move.
So the solution is still illegal.

But that's maybe the idea, there is no solution! (2010-6-28)

La1 is promoted, and last move was -1...a7xb6+. Black's 14 pawn captures + 3 white units showing = one too many units. Removing any white unit or black pawn cuts the number of caps needed by at least one in all cases. Removing Tb7 saves 2 captures. Removing La1 saves 5 captures. (2007-12-8)

Mario Richter: Last moves were: -0. ... c4xb3 e.p.+ -1.b2-b4 Rc3-d3+ (or Rd2-d3+). In the resulting position, bPh7 must have promoted on h1, so w0-0 is illegal. (2010-7-10)
Henrik Juel: In the given solution, 3.De5 makes no sense.
Poobably the stipulation should be h#1.5, with solution 1... Sc3+ 2.Kf5 Tf1#. (2010-7-11)
Mario Richter: I don't know, if the diagram is only misprinted, or if this is a version, which tries to correct the original problem.
The original position in Stella Polaris No.4 1968 (December) was: 8/B1p1p3/pp1p2r1/b2PP1p1/P3k3/Pp1rP1P1/2B3P1/1b1NK2R
w: Ba7 Pd5 Pe5 Pa4 Pa3 Pe3 Pg3 Bc2 Pg2 Nd1 Ke1 Rh1
b: Pc7 Pe7 Pa6 Pb6 Pd6 Rg6 Ba5 Pg5 Ke4 Pb3 Rd3 Bb1
with the intended solution: 1. ... Sc3+ 2.Kf5 Ld1 3.dxe5 Tf1# (not 0-0?)
If this is a corrected version, then perhaps not only the position changed, but also the stipulation!? (With h#1.5, the problem is correct!) (2010-7-11)
Henrik Juel: The original version, given by Mario, was cooked (in the forward play). The PDB version here is a correction given in Stella Polaris no. 2, June 1969, p. 39; in the correction, the stipulation was changed to 'h#2, Weiss zieht an' (or h#1.5), as we surmised. (2010-7-12)

TBr: Paul, "2. Preis" seems to relate to diagrammes 1989 - in Problemist 1995 this problem was reprinted?! (2010-8-9)
Harry Fougiaxis: This is a good chance (even if perhaps not the right place!) to ask the PDB admin team why the reprints/quotes are listed above the diagram, together with the source. Imho, this is a quite bad practice and it can create a lot of confusion. (2010-8-10)
Gerd Wilts: Personally I like it very much to see the reprints directly above the diagram. Maybe a compromise would be to hide reprints by default and display them only after a click on a 'more...' link, as for hidden comments? (2010-8-17)
Henrik Juel: I like that idea for a compromise, Gerd. (2010-8-17)
